The Smithsonian Museums in Washington D.C. are some of the most popular tourist attractions and the National Postal Museum is a fascinating option, just around the corner from our Washington D.C. hotel. The National Philatelic Collection was established in 1886 with a donated sheet of 10-cent Confederate postage stamps and over the years, the growing collection was housed in various sites until the National Postal Museum opened in its current location in 1993.
The museum is found in the lower level of the City Post Office Building which served as the Washington D.C. post office from 1914 through 1986. Created through a joint agreement between the Smithsonian Institution and the United States Postal Service, this museum's mission is to study, preserve and present postal history and philately through educational programs, exhibits and research.
Today, this museum houses the world's largest collection of stamps and features an engaging presentation of the postal system's intriguing history. View rare stamps and related materials, including the first adhesive postage stamp, John Lennon's personal stamp collection from his childhood and even a set of keys owned by Oscar S. Woody, a Post Clerk on the Royal Mail Ship (RMS) Titanic. In addition to the exhibits, the museum includes a research library, museum shop and stamp store.
