Stay at the Phoenix Park hotel near Washington DC National Zoo, less than four miles away. Established by an Act of Congress in March of 1889, this Washington DC zoo became part of the Smithsonian Institute just one year later. Today, the zoo, situated in Rock Creek Park, is one of the top things to do in Washington DC and welcomes more than 2 million visitors annually with a scenic 163-acre park offering living examples of around 2,000 animals representing almost 400 species.

As an ambassador for research, education and conservation, almost a quarter of the zoo's animals are endangered, including western lowland gorillas, giant pandas and Asian elephants. Two of the best-known inhabitants are the two giant pandas Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, on a ten-year loan from China. Marvel at three Asian elephants, five Sumatran tigers, three adult cheetahs, two bald eagles and a dazzling assortment of animals, reptiles and insects. Children will especially enjoy the Kids' Farm where they can discover the excitement of meeting and caring for domesticated farm animals. Admission to the Smithsonian National Zoo is free, although there is a parking fee. The zoo is open daily year-round except for Christmas.
