The Capitol building is located atop Capitol Hill at the east end of the National Mall. The original structure, designed by Dr. William Thornton, an amateur architect, was begun in 1793 and has since been destroyed, rebuilt, enlarged and remodeled.

The Capitol Building encompasses five levels including the Chambers of the House of Representative and the Senate, where visitors may watch proceedings from the third-floor gallery when Congress is in session. Open daily for public guided US Capitol tours Monday through Saturday from 9am to 4:30pm except for Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
