Smithsonian Museum of American History
The Smithsonian Museum of American History proudly displays the heritage of the United States. Items on display include Dorthy's ruby red slippers from the Wizard of Oz, the original Star-Spangled Banner Flag and a full scale replica of Julia Child's Kitchen. The museum is open daily (except for December 25) and admission is free.
Set within the expansive Rock Creek National Park and a part of the Smithsonian Institution, the National Zoo features 2,000 individual animals from 400 different species from around the world in true-to-life habitats. Admission is free and the Zoo is open 364 days a year!
National Children’s Museum
The National Children’s Museum features hands-on exhibits to inspire children to care about the world and become better, more conscious citizens. Standard admission is $10 per person (children 12 months and younger are free).
National Postal Museum
The National Postal Museum, a Smithsonian Institution museum, is located in the old Post Office building next to Union Station. Dedicated to the preservation of postal history, the museum offers visitors a chance to stroll along a Colonial post road, ride in a mail stagecoach and browse a 1920’s post office. Admission is free and guests can receive free stamps to start a stamp collection!
